Deck and fence staining in Portland and nearby

Our crew washes and stains decks and fences in Portland, in Sumner County, and across our six-town area. Gray, weathered wood is often sound underneath. A careful wash takes the gray and the growth off, the wood gets time to dry, and then it takes a stain evenly instead of in blotches.

What we do on wood

  • Wood decks and railings
  • Deck stairs
  • Wood fences
  • Washing on its own
  • Washing, then staining

The method

Wood needs a lighter touch

Wood is softer than concrete. Too much pressure raises the grain and leaves the surface fuzzy, which then soaks up stain unevenly. Decks and fences get a lower-pressure wash than a driveway, with the cleaner doing more of the work.

After the wash the wood has to dry out before any stain goes on. Stain on damp wood does not soak in properly and fails early, so there is usually a gap between the wash and the stain.

The pair of photos here is one deck: bare and freshly washed, then finished in a dark stain.

Choosing a finish

Stain, color and fences

Darker stains hide more of the grain and more of the wear. Lighter ones show more of the wood itself. Either way, the color is your call, and it is worth settling before the stain day.

Fences are washed the same way as decks. A fence can be washed on its own, or washed and stained to match a deck.

If you only want the wood cleaned this year and stained later, that works too. Ask for washing, staining or both when you request a quote.

FAQ

Deck and fence questions

Can you wash the deck without staining it?
Yes. Washing on its own is a common job. Staining is an add-on you can take now or later.
How long after washing can the deck be stained?
Once the wood is dry, which depends on the weather and how much shade the deck gets. You will get a date for the stain once the wash is done.
Do you clean fences?
Yes, wood fences. They get the same low-pressure wash as a deck, and can be stained too.
Do you help pick a stain color?
We will talk it through when we quote. The final color is yours to choose.
